With the festive season fast approaching, Christmas singles are being released with many of them providing a message about the true spirit of Christmas. Dorset singer/songwriter “Ruffdog Elliott” has never been one to hold back on his social and political opinions. His newly released Christmas tune “Another Glass of Christmas” looks at the commercial effects, Ruffdog explains: “There is too much pressure to spend more money than we actually have at Christmas, the big wheels of commercialism love people to be in debt as they turn and grind. So let’s not lose sight of what’s important. If you can find the humanity in this season and be thankful for the truly important things like spending time with family and friends, chances are you will have a great time – even if you didn’t receive that brand new phone, gold ring or game station. We all love getting presents, but let’s try not to give more than we can afford this season”
The lyrics tells a short story of a couple just starting out on life’s journey together while they worry about debt and the ability to afford to treat each other, what really matters is they love each other. There is a little nod to that, a small shout against the commercialism of Christmas and the huge debts that many will incur just trying to put smiles on the faces of their loved ones. With the caring sentiment at the song’s heart, Ruffdog has brought together some fine musicians together to join forces on the vocals and instrumentation. There is local all-rounder Aaron Carter on bass/keys, with strings by Barbara Gasior with Ruffdog’s partner Norny B providing backing vocals.
The tune kicks off with a piano, acoustic guitar and sleigh bells intro before Ruffdog’s gruff vocals join to conjure up the two very different sides of yule. The song has a feel of “Fairy Tale of New York” to it with the violin, along with Ruffdog’s and Norny B’s vocals combining charmingly together. The chorus gives a nod to the “Holidays are Coming” Coca Cola tracks we always see at this time of year with the lyrics “Those Red and White trucks aren’t bringing you any luck this year”. It’s a great effort from a story-teller who has lived a life & some, his words are always well thought out and make total sense.
