So, those West London Indie starlets The Bluetones are back after a 14 year hiatus; with a British Tour including a Bournemouth date, and a stellar new Ep to boot. Going out on their own label Brainhole Records, the quartet unleash title track “Drive Thru” with an accompanying video that I feel earmarks a whole new sound. It’s dare I suggest Indie/Electro – anyone expecting something in the “Slight Return” ballpark may be disappointed but pleasantly surprised in equal measure.

Gentle cymbal tapping and light chords open the song as it gently builds, before Mark (Morriss) familiar layered vocals kick in. The cinematic night-driving footage in the video provides a wonderful backdrop to the band playing in a tight space in what looks like a basement club. It’s as mesmerising as it is infectious. The bridge is a heavy squall of chords and clever keys wizardry before the song kicks back into life. The spelling of Drive ‘Thru’ would suggest the band are no longer hankered to record company directives and happiest now releasing material on their own terms.

And if you’re still not convinced then head out to the Old Fire Station (Bournemouth) on Thursday 17th October and see for yourselves; better still, invest in some merch while you’re there!!

If that wasn’t enough to whet your appetites, there wont be any ridiculous ticket prices as with a certain other band who shall remain nameless. With the whole Indie Live circuit enjoying something of a renaissance, now is the time to go and see a band with their original line-up plugging their wares – this will be less of a Slight Return and more of a Drive Thru the past and present!!
