News: Alternative Dorsette Have Brought Out Two New Cassettes

Alternative Dorsette is a DIY record label, set up in September 2023 by two friends who live in Swanage: Matt Rayner & Mark Chadderton. They are committed to documenting the alternative music scene in Dorset, be it from the past or present. This is a back-to-basics project, as both co-founders were actively involved within the early 1980s DIY cassette boom.
One of the reasons for reverting back to releasing music on cassette instead of other formats is to reduce our carbon footprint by using less plastic, so to this end, all our tapes won’t have a classic plastic case but will come with a uniform O-card cover. In addition, we will source all our product manufacturing from suppliers as close to us as possible, within the UK only. We will also endeavour to use recycled materials for postage and packing.
Available via the online platform limitedrun.com, each “first edition” tape release will be limited to 25 copies. Any subsequent re-pressing will be in quantities of 25 maximum or less, with a different coloured cassette shell and cover. Every release will include a download of that cassette’s music, plus a detailed PDF zine/booklet dedicated to the release in question’s artist, including their history, ephemera and photos, as well as in-depth interviews with band members in order to document their place in the history of alternative music and the culture of Alternative Dorset.
Alternative Dorsette is a labour of love and we would urge any band or artist from Dorset’s alternative music scene, of any ‘alternative’ musical genre, or from any period, to get in touch with us, as we’d love to document what part you played in Dorset’s musical heritage. The two releases feat two stalwart bands of the local alternative music scene The Mistakes and Kill The Colossi. Both cassette releases are on a Limited rum featuring rare and unreleased songs. The Kill The Colossi 15 track cassette is called “Unhinged” featuring rehearsal recordings along with two unreleased songs.
The Mistakes release is called “You are Your Own Jailer”, which is an 11 track adventure through the band’s first recording session at Active Music Studios in Poole way back in 2008. Both releases come together with colour detailed fanzines and digital copies of the tracks, for those of you who haven’t got cassette players in your car.
