Stuart Hutton aka the “One Eyed Man” has recently released his new single “Celebes Sea”, the track was recorded at “Creation X” studios in Wokingham. I was first made aware of Stuart when I saw him perform in Wimborne at the Allendale Centre as part of the Folk Festival “Live & Loud” competition.
He explained on the night that he only entered as his Mum lived locally in Wimborne and it would be a rare chance that she could see him perform. With a fifteen strong line-up the competition was tough and Stuart with his songs and his storytelling won the whole thing outright, getting a very positive reaction from the audience and all the judges. This gave him a coveted place to perform at the prestigious Wimborne Minster Folk Festival last June.
The new single “Celebes Sea” takes inspiration from his travels around the world and it shows off the creative and descriptive side to his song making. The song was his first to use a loop station within the creation process; using layered vocals, guitar and percussion. The loop is used to provide the fundamentals of the track and allows Stuart room to add the lead parts of the song.
With some intricately picked acoustic guitar, combined by understated piano; the song beautifully meanders with progressive hand-clap percussion and some skilful string work, with an impressive middle eight providing the crescendo. Stuart’s laidback layered voice, that is not that far away from Jack Johnson’s style; coupled with the unique instrumentation creates an atmospheric piece, that marks a moment in time that he felt was important enough to write about.
“Celebes Sea” is out now and can be found on the all the major streaming platforms here.
