After the release of the “Yin” Ep last year, the Jonny Phillips Trio return with the release of the three-track ‘Yang’ EP on the 13th January at a special gig at the Bear Cave in Bournemouth. The EP has a positive, more personal and cynical side to it than the broader themed “Yin”. It was partly recorded in the studio, and partly put together in Jonny’s VW campervan. It features a rustic edge that is reminiscent of the Folk/Rock movement of the 60s, but puts a modern spin on that classic sound. Every aspect from themes and production, to lyrics and artwork has been considered to juxtapose and balance its older and opposite “yin”.
The three songs were all showcased during the “Live & Unheard” gig at Poole Lighthouse, where the trio performed a sterling headline set full of highlights. The first track is “Life Raft”; kicking off wih some of Kris’s creative basslines before Jonny’s shimmering guitar kicks in, along with Justin’s infectious percussion. Jonny’s lyrics have a remarkable way of taking a positive spin on a variety of subjects with subtle ecological and political messages.
“Never Change” was inspired by the eccentric personality of Jonny’s daughter and is a reminder to her and others that your best self is your true self. It features some wonderfully infectious moments of creativity, where the three guys really show their brotherhood-like chemistry. Jonny’s voice here is sounding very pure and harmonic; giving the track its main focus, backed with some equally delightful and clever instrumentation.
The final track “Nag Champa” is one of Jonny’s classic compositions, which was first heard back with his former band “Willowen”. Its name is taken from an Indian fragrance used in incense; it is the perfect feel-good song to brighten anyone’s mood. It is bright, cheerful and a live favourite that has the ability to lift anyone that hears it. This re-recorded version features some notable drum parts and basslines with some understated dreamy guitar parts, with Jonny’s vocals sounding as though he is smiling from ear to ear. It is such a happy tune and one that is a very welcome addition to the band’s live set, with its final gang chorus it easily persuades anyone to join in with a mass uplifting sing-a-long.
If you are feeling down in the dumps in January and you need a pick me up; get yourself along to the JP3 gig, I promise you won’t regret it!!
