Sussex-based Gutter/Garage/Rockers Sweet Jonny are back with a recent single, affectionately titled Cheesy Chips. This is the first release from their forthcoming (as yet untitled) ‘concept album’. Quirky yet humorous from the outset, it contains the wondrous line “cheesy chips that’s what I said, doner meat in pitta bread…”! The rasping guitar riff running through it remains a constant, matched to a rat-a-tat snare pattern. Swirling squalls of guitar noise pepper the early bridge, continuing throughout.
After just one listen you’ll be hooked and singing this song all day long. The earworm riff in the latter bridge keeps one interested while Tom’s infectious vocals take centre stage.
The Sultans of Ping FC influence is hard to ignore but this song alone strays more from their familiar Garage/Punk leanings. I’m guessing the lifting of the Adam Ant “friend of a friend” lyric is purely coincidental while the ending is wonderfully abrupt. Keep an eye on this trio people, these guys won’t be hanging around in the gutter much longer – they are headed for the mainstream!!
