The Anvil, Bournemouth

The Dangerous Summer

It is with great delight that I see The Dangerous Summer return to the Anvil, they visited here back in 2011 when the venue was called the iBar and played a really memorable show. The Maryland, USA-based band released three studio albums and performed on the US Warped Tour in 2011. The band sadly folded in 2014 after a host of personal issues brought everything to a grinding halt. With the slate wiped clean and all their problems behind them lead vocalist AJ Perdomo reformed the band recruiting Ben Cato (Drums), Matt Kennedy (Guitar) and touring guitarist Alfie Scully. At the beginning of the year the band released their fourth album and in March toured the UK with Mooseblood. Tonight they arrive at the Anvil after a weekend playing some shows at the Slam Dunk Festival and have brought a sizeable crowd of fans with them.

As usual with the local Chalk Ink promoted shows a full support line-up brings together some more than welcome local talent to get the evening started. The first of these is Sven from just down the M27 in Portsmouth; a four-piece with a fuzzed effect, shoegaze guitar sound. The band perform tunes from their debut EP “Seventeen” which was released back in February of this year. The tunes include a passionate number called “Father” which sees some Stirling vocal delivery and twin-guitar work. The slower more atmospheric “Into You” and “Consume” with is dark rooted bass alongside some creative electic guitars end the band’s enjoyable set.

Next Up from Salisbury are Luice, a three-piece who impress right from the start with their creative guitar melodies, vocal harmonies and their thoroughly positive demeanour. These guys are making their debut appearance in Bournemouth tonight and despite their hometown being under quarantine for the last couple of months they seem to have survived and show themselves to be fighting fit. We are treated to some great tunes from their forthcoming debut album “MĖ™sica Uno” including the epicly uplifting “Sleep” and “The Summer” which delivers a slice of great no-nonsense rock with some inspiring songwriting. The Band consist of Luke Lucas (Guitar & Vocals), Cameron Walker (Bass & Vocals) and the hard-hitting muscular god of drumming Thor Porter. The trio really make their short time on stage count and get a warm positive reaction from the crowd as they triumphantly leave the stage.

Bournemouth’s “Wolf Culture” are the final support of the evening and take to the stage with plenty of support from the audience. This band I only saw a few weeks ago and they are building themselves a solid reputation as a great live band, getting plenty of positive press and they have just announced a 9 date UK tour supporting “Roam”.

The four-piece who only formed back in 2015 entertain us with tunes from their debut EP “The Devil’s Plans for Idle Hands” with was released on California-based label “Common Ground Records”. The band combines infectious twin-guitar melodies with creative rhythms, coupled with Max Dervan’s spot on vocal delivery. They have a specific style with plenty of various injected influences. The band end their set with EP opener “Wreck” and the crowd willingly join in singing the lyrics back at the band.

The Anvil basement is virtually at capacity as The Dangerous Summer push their way through the tight-packed crowd to get to the small stage. Aj takes a quick gulp of American Bourbon Jim Beam before the band launch into opening number “Colors”. You can see from the smiles on the excited faces of much of the audience that this band and their passionate lyrics mean so much. The new line-up of the band sound as good if not better than the previous one, with some beautifully delivered atmospheric guitars that have been the staple part of the band’s songs. We are treated to tunes like the older “Weathered”, “Catholic Girls” back to back with new tunes like the epic uplifting “Fire” and the sentimental stay awake all night number “Infinite”. Aj, despite a heavy festival weekend, delivers some stunningly passionate vocals that breathe life into these very intimate personal songs.

The band kindly cut their set a little short tonight as much of the audience need to catch the last train home. There is though time for one last number in the form of the awesome “Permanent Rain” which gets the audience all singing along word perfect together. The band leave the stage to mingle with the audience and sample what liquid refreshments Bournemouth has to offer.

A stunningly great night and the return of a much-loved band who hopefully can continue to move on from their difficult past and rise once again.
