You can’t get more metal than a steel “Girder”, and Girder is the chosen name for the South Coast-based band who formed in 2023 with the coming together of four Heavy Metal maniacs. The mission was to join forces to create a noise akin to that of the heavy metal forefathers, along with influenceS from some of their favourite bands from that genre. Take bands like Saxon, Dokken, Iron Maiden, Venom, Judas Priest, Slayer, Motörhead, Queensrÿche, Celtic Frost and Bathory and put them in a heavy metal blender and then you will have Girder’s sound that spans between melodic Hard Rock/Metal and early Extreme Metal with elements of Punk and Prog!
Their story begins with two Brazilian punks named Metal Dress and Hordak II, who moved to the UK to form a heavy metal band with English dragon slayers Metal Matt and Iron Paul. The four have been playing in other bands for many years and bring their experience into creating music that reinvigorates the New Wave of British heavy metal sound and other old school Metal styles, with bits of experimentalism.
The band have just released their 9 track self-titled debut album. It has a bit of a Spinal Tap feel to it and the band clearly are happy enjoying themselves, while having a bit of heavy metal fun. There are plenty of heavy metal stereotypes; powerful vocals, expletives, guitar solos and solid rhythms to enjoy. What the record lacks in production is more than made up in enthusiasm. It kicks off with “Headbangers Ball” and there starts a rollercoaster ride with a tune that Beavis and Butthead themselves would most certainly rock out to.
Highlights include the anthemic “Fire to The Realm” and the epic “Bad Charlie”, while you get your lighters in the air for “Rekindle the Flame”. The album closes with the band’s own theme tune, a track that has an infectious sing-a-long quality and one that I’m sure they all have dreamed of performing on stage at the Download Festival. If you like your metal hard, heavy and with riffs aplenty, look no further than Girder.
