Ahead of the full “Rebel Hero” EP release in January, South Coast troubadour DD Allen has been in the studio and re-recorded one of his classic tracks “Holborn Avenue”. DD explains “Holborn Avenue” is a nostalgic exploration of first love and the bittersweet memories that linger long after. I think how you handle the weight of your memories defines who you become.

Even though the track sounds like a heartbreak song, that whole story and chapter of my life makes me smile. It’s probably the purest song I’ve written. She always had a gift for turning an ordinary day into something extraordinary. It was a special journey, and we were young. But fate tore us apart in the end.”

The track encapsulates a transformative moment in DD’s life, emerging from a profound personal reflection after moving on from a significant life-shaping relationship. The track features falsetto vocals, textured guitars, harmonica and a touch of synth with the instrumentation and lyrics capturing the essence of youthful love and the inevitability of change.

DD is a impressive lyricist and prides himself on creating powerful descriptive and highly personal lyrics. I’ve had the privilege of watching DD blossom from a shy young solo singer to the mature and resourceful musician, who creates some fantastic contemporary music. ‘Holborn Avenue’ with its new reworking; featuring the teasingly chilling harmonica at the start to DD’s charismatic vocal, the creative rhythms to the atmospheric moody guitar sound. The track and its lyrics clearly mean a lot to it’s creator and deserve to be heard by a wider audience.
