No sooner do I review one Aussie Punk band and another comes along for consideration. Well, on three listens I’m suitably hooked. 2 Mums describe themselves as “re-birthed Christian RnR” and for that, we should be thankful – there’s no room on this webpage for God-botherers!!
I digress: 2 Mums take some of the best elements of British Post/Punk and 3rd Wave (80’s) Punk, slam it in a blender and hey presto – “Policeman”. It’s a song centred around a copper who has lost his job through his bullying antics and the subsequent dullness of his life through a lost occupation. There’s an aggression in the vocal throughout that reminds me of Martin Roper (Anti Pasti) over squally guitars and a wall of sound that hint at The Fall. Production values would fall to Gang of Four’s Andy Gill (RIP) but you get the picture.
It’s brash, hard-edged and in-yer-face. The clever bass sits neatly in the background while the drums gently build before the vocal ferocity kicks in. The bass throbs in the middle eight briefly break up the song before the Gang of Four-influenced noodling takes centre stage – then that vocal, now at hollering point screams into action with the cries of “hey Policeman you lost your job, hey Policeman you lost your authority…” that anger and intensity continues through to its conclusion. If this is a benchmark for future 2Mums releases then that future is bright. On the strength of “Policeman” I don’t see them becoming a Melodic Punk band anytime soon, but that may just be to their advantage. I shall “watch this space” with interest…..
