North Yorkshire Indie/Rock outfit Cold Culprits aka multi-instrumentalist Andy C Watson is to start 2021 on the front foot with a new single ‘Great Escape’ released on 22nd January. The track follows the debut EP “Episode1”, which was released at the end of last year. Andy Watson, formed a band in 2018 to focus on original and cover material. When this evolved into a pure Indie/Rock covers band, Andy needed an outlet for his creativity. He learned drums and keyboards to underpin his vocals and guitar, and Cold Culprits was born. After a string of singles in 2020, Cold Culprits begins 2021 with a tighter, more polished approach. Great Escape sails closer to Alt/Pop than previous offerings, yet still has some traces of the Punk-inspired sound of earlier releases.
Andy Explains “I originally wrote Great Escape as lyrics over a chord progression on my acoustic guitar, no Microsoft Word for this one! Just a guitar, a pen and paper. Oh, and plenty of scribbling out and trying to capture my emotional state. It was written at a time when I was feeling a bit lost in the world and I needed to work out what was important to me. Writing that first draft kinda changed my outlook and when I bashed out the drum parts and picked up the electric guitar, the song had evolved into something more optimistic.” The track was created during a testing time in Andy’s life, with his music being a welcome diversion from the global pandemic and his personal domestic challenges. The track combines melodic guitars with synths and infectious rhythms, along with Andy’s ever-changing vocal style. He’s not content with standing still and the track is an offering quite different from those previously released. The lyrics come from a highly personal state, featuring life-changing challenges and decisions. Andy gives a warning with “don’t you waste your great escape like this. It’s important to follow your dreams, stay focused, but don’t let them consume you”
Great Escape is out on 22nd January, available through all the usual streaming and download services.
Great Escape: Lyrics
Run through alleyways
Stone cold, your wind blows
And moves me on my way
Still hollow, hearing echoes
Of uncertainty, yeah
Signposts disappear
Tell my mother
That I won’t be coming home
Tell my father
It’s in me and I have to roam
Sons and daughters
Don’t you waste your great escape like this
Climb through mountain range
Push back, against attack
Winds lift me on your way
Stay like that, stay on track
No uncertainty, yeah
End this vacancy
Tell my mother
That I won’t be coming home
Tell my father
It’s in me and I have to roam
Sons and daughters
Don’t you waste your great escape like this
Swim through fire lake
Move in, take a hold
Flames push me on my way
Control my goal
No uncertainty, yeah
End this vacancy
Tell my mother
That I won’t be coming home
Tell my father
It’s in me and I have to roam
Sons and daughters
Don’t you waste your great escape like this.
