A unique music project with collaboration and improvisation at its heart, the Lockett-Vettese Band has taken up residency at Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, this week to create a new piece of work that will be performed and recorded as a one-off event. The band, a meeting of the music and minds of award-winning percussionist Pete Lockett and internationally acclaimed songwriter/keyboardist Peter-John Vettese, will work on new music ahead of a one-off concert to an empty Theatre at Lighthouse that will be recorded for future broadcast as an online streaming event.
The collaboration launches the ‘Other Voices Other Rooms’ artists-in-residence series of unique performances. Virtuoso soloists in their own rights, Pete Lockett and Peter-John Vettese join forces to open the post-lockdown series at Lighthouse as resident artists, creating and improvising spontaneously in a whole new cinematic soundscape, exploring connections with an eclectic list of guest artists.
“Lighthouse is delighted to be able to welcome this most creative and inspiring partnership and to help Pete and Peter realise their latest ambition,” says Chief Executive Elspeth McBain.
“During lockdown Pete undertook a number of remote collaborations with different artists from around the world and was keen to take the experience to the next level and work with fellow artists in person but behind closed doors. Reopening Lighthouse, albeit in a limited way, has meant we have been able to explore new ways of using our performance spaces until we can admit full audiences again.
“To host international musicians of this calibre reminds us of the power of the arts to make sense of the world. I can’t wait to hear what they create at Lighthouse.”
A versatile and prolific performer, Pete Lockett draws on musical traditions from traditional Carnatic and Hindustani music of North and South India to traditional Japanese taiko drumming in styles that range from blues, funk and rock to classical, folk, ethnic and electronic. He has recorded and performed with artists as diverse as Bjork, Peter Gabriel, The Verve, Pet Shop Boys, Nitin Sawney, Jeff Beck and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Composer-producer-arranger Peter-John Vettese has worked closely with numerous leading figures in the music industry for more than three decades as well as writing and producing the music for several independent films and various installations while continuing to pursue his first love of performance.
During their week at Lighthouse the legendary musician-composer-producer Bill Bruford, best known for his work with the likes of Yes, King Crimson and Genesis, will record an interview with Pete Lockett and Peter-John Vettese for future broadcast as part of the streaming experience.
The concert will be streamed on Friday October 23 at 8pm and tickets (name your price) are available from lockett-vettese.live.
The Lockett-Vettese Band project will be produced by Paul Cameron.
