Feathers, Wood ‘n’ String are a duo of ex-pats now residing in Southampton’s musical hotspot, and released in July was this rather wonderful song entitled ‘Marionette’ which thankfully came to our attention. The song has all the hallmarks of Dark Wave, Alt-Rock, Goth if I’m going to be genre-specific. The searing, layered vocals of one Sarah Fletcher have a truly haunting range that (to me) echo bands like Sunshot and Feline (Die So Fluid). A chugging bassline throughout is the key element but that bellowing, the searing vocal is the star turn; despite Lloyd Fletcher taking care of all instrumentation.
Evanescence would be an obvious influence but one wouldn’t want to detract from the majesty of this song and its heartfelt, honest lyrics. I’m just left wondering how they would replicate this in the live arena? That said there are many great venues in their Southampton base where they could play and one assumes flesh out their line-up. “Marionette” is unique enough not to sound like previous singles ‘From Nowhere’ and ‘Barbed Wire’. In fact, all three songs would be a good start point for anyone new to the band and I look forward to a long-player from this confident duo in the not too distant future.
